A quantitative ultrasound model of the bone with blood as the interstitial fluid

A variant of the Biot–Johnson model of a poroelastic material is investigated to see if the viscosity of the interstitial fluid is significant in the ultrasound insonification of non-defatted cancellous bone. The equations of motion are derived using a Lagrangian formulation. Numerical experiments are performed on various bone samples. It is shown that the viscosity of the interstitial fluid does indeed signify in the ultrasound frequency range. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
